The International Appalachian Mountain Trail, which once finished at Mt. Katadin in the state of Maine, now runs the entire length of the Appalachians from Georgia in the southern United States to Gaspé. It is at Gaspé that the Appalachians and the St. Lawrence River meet the Atlantic.
Industry profile
World attention is on ecotourism. Ecotourism is even more oriented toward a conscience of the importance and the wealth of the natural environment than was the concept of sustainable development. Gaspé has been a tourist destination since before the completion of the Perron highway which encircled the Gaspésie in 1927. There are shows, theatre, music and a culture of local artists and artisans, musicians and more. Forillon national Park and the estuaries of three salmon rivers which empty into the Gaspé Bay create a superlative decor.
Active economic sectors
The many watershed and marine environments at Gaspé permit fishing, aquatic activities and research and development projects of all kinds.
The infrastructures of the MRC support ecotourism and adventure tourism. Tourism is presently diversified and substantial and the tourism sector finds favor with government and decision makers. The beauty of the Chic Chocs and the National Parks infrastructures augment the regions offerings and demonstrate its importance. The Gaspésies flora and fauna are diversified, distinctive and omnipresent.
Gaspé offers a healthy natural environment. |
